The Volunteer Experience

The front page of the travel section of the Boston Globe on Aug 22, 2004 features a color picture of Sam skillfully paddling his double yellow kayak in Marblehead Harbor. His grin stretches from ear to ear. Above the picture of Sam is a picture of Chris carefully transferring himself from his wheelchair into a single kayak. His biceps bulge and his determination is palpable.

Sam, who has Downs Syndrome, and Chris, who does not have use of his legs, are two of the many individuals that enjoy Outdoor Explorations trips throughout the year. On this specific kayaking trip, like all of our outdoor adventures, OE Volunteers contribute to making our programs fun and meaningful. OE Volunteers also experience first-hand the magic that results when a group of people, of all abilities, go on an outdoor adventure together. Come join us as a new volunteer and experience the magic!

The Facts About Volunteering

How do OE Volunteers contribute?

Every OE Program is staffed with a trip leader and three or more volunteers. The volunteers help on trips in many ways, including guiding people, working one on one with participants, leading games, and trip preparation and wrap-up. Volunteers can also lend their time and skills to OE by assisting in the adaptation of outdoor equipment, speaking at conferences about our programs, or helping in the office. Volunteers are asked to participate in a certain number of trips per year (between three and five) and to attend a weekend of general Volunteer Training in May. All new volunteers need to also attend a weekend of New Volunteer Training in April.
